Objective
To create a superconducting magnet for the ATLAS experiment that provides the optimised magnetic field configuration for particle bending around the various detectors in a light and open structure, thus minimizing scattering effects.

Solution
A magnet system that consists of three sub-systems:

It generates a stable, precise and predictable magnetic field in an enormous volume and is fully integrated with the detectors in an overall 20 x 20 x 25 m3 assembly. The Barrel Toroid covers the central region and provides some 3 - 8 Tm. The forward regions are covered by 2 End-Cap Toroids providing 3 - 8 Tm. The Central Solenoid provides 2 tesla in the central tracking volume.
